Our Farm
The 3600 acre (1456 ha) farm is located in south-eastern Saskatchewan near the community of Oxbow, 250 km from Regina (the provincial capital). Dotted with kettle lakes, remnants of glaciation, the farm is a mix of aspen parkland, perennial forages and cultivated farmland. With over 600 acres (243 ha) of wildlife habitat, the farm is home to a wide variety of animals including moose, elk, white-tailed deer, coyotes, red fox, and racoons. In addition the farm hosts a variety of birds including ducks, geese, songbirds, and hummingbirds.
Diverse crop rotation is the foundation of Moose Creek Organic Farm’s cropping system and pest management strategy. The climate - cold winters with warm summers - is ideal for high protein spring wheat and other cereal grains. Peas and lentils fix nitrogen and allow for extended cropping. Green manures are used to rebuild the soil. Deep-rooted alfalfa brings crop nutrients to the surface and adds large amounts of nitrogen and organic matter for improved soil tilth and soil conservation. The farm uses a wide variety of cultural and mechanical pest-control strategies.
